16th anniversary of Selena the iconic Latin/tejano singer

tomorrow is the 16th anniversery of the death of latin/tejano iconic singer selena. she did alot for both communites. in my opinion if she was still live she would be the next madonna, janet jackson, paula abdul, mariah carey and whitney houston. Her English album debuted number one which made Selena the first Latin and tejano artist to do so. certainly when she released amor prohibido album before dreaming of you she was already being compared to the likes of latin icons gloria estefan, luis miguel, ceila cruz, julio iglesias and ana gabriel. but with dreaming of you i compared her to the ones who queens of pop music before i mentioned the latin icons. she was being called the mexican madonna as well as nbc nightly news anchor tom brokow called her that and was the first major network to break the news that selena died.
shortly after, people like Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Julio iglesias, Luis Miguel and others expressed their condoluences to selenas family.



here's the story of her journey:

one day, selena's father was playing the guitar and she was singing her father was very impressed with her singing that he wanted to create a band. so her two older siblings would join in as brother was guitar and sister was drums. the band became selena y los dinos. by 1986 she was named female vocalist of the year. over the next 9 years she would dominate the tejano music awards. in 1989, a music executive named jose behar of emi latin noticed her singing at the tejano music awards and was very impressed by her that she is going to be the next gloria estefan. so emi signed her up. they dropped the named selena y los dinos and it became simply selena. but the band would still be there for conecerts of course. her debut studio album did very good. her second album was very good and had a breakthrough song that became an international hit called como la flor.



her husband whom she married in 1992 was the lead guitars. her third album became a live album which was yet another commerical success. it even led her up to grammy nomination. by 1994, she won her first grammy for best mexican-american album. by that time she quickly earned the title queen of tejano music. although i think she should also be the queen of latin pop. also that year, she released amor prohibido which became commerically and internationally successful as by the end of 1994 she became the first latin artist to have number one singles in one year and became the first female latin artist to have number ones in one album. by late 1994 selena and emi decided it was time to make an english album to crossover mainstream. she began production for it that year and in 1995. she had a big concert at the houston astrodome in 1995 as it would be her last concert of her career.



while her musical success continued on in 1991 a registred nurse named yolanda saldivar had noticed selena and was impressed with her singing that she asked her dad if she wanted to build a fan club and her father said yes. by 1994 when selena opened up her botiques in texas yolanda quit her job as registered nurse to work for selena full-time as manager of her botiques and continue her role as fan club president. by march 1995, selena's family and selena herself began noticing that their was money taken from the fan club as selena's family fired yolanda from her positions. in between that time yolanda purchased a gun. she briefly returned but when selena demanded for the missing paperwork she rebought the gun. right around that time selena was planning on opening another botique in mexico. on march 31, 1995 selena agreed to meet yolanda at a days inn hotel to straighten out financial paperwork. yolanda made up a lie and said that she had been raped when she was making a trip up to mexico when she was helping selena out open up that botique. selena drove yolanda to a nearby hospital but doctors didnt find nothing wrong with her. so selena and yolanda went back to the hotel room to discuss financial paperwork. selena and yolanda were arguing as it escalated and escalated. selena told yolanda that you cant be trusted no more and you are fired from both job positions. when selena left the hotel room, yolanda immeaditely pulled out her gun and shot selena in the back. selena was running like crazy and was yelling out for help! yolanda was going to shot her for the second time but instead yelled out you bit**!! selena went to the hotel lobby and asked the workers to call 911 and close the doors immeaditely because yolanda was going to shot her again. the hotel workers didnt know who she was at that time. although one of the workers knew her and shouted out thats selena! the workers asked who was the lady that killed you. she replies the woman in 158. whats her name says the hotel worker? yolanda she replies. the ambulance came and selena lost all of her blood and was pronounced dead at 1:05 p.m.



meanwhile, yolanda was in her pick up truck and was in a stand off nearly 9 hourse and boom she was arrested and sentenced to life in prison.


then, her death sent millions of shockwaves around the tejano and latin community. as the major networks stopped their regular programming to break the news that selena died. nbc was the first network to break the news that she died.

by the summer of 1995, she released dremaing of you which became a success and produced 5 english tracks and the rest were remixes of her big spanish hits. the big mainstream english hits were dreaming of you and i could fall in love.
