Croydon College Vocational Tower Approved

Another tall building in Croydon, this time a mixed use plan by Nightingale Associates, has gotten approval by the local council.

The developer is Croydon Vocational College who are rather keen on a new building to replace the current Fairfield Building that dates to the 1950s. To pay for this they've come up with the idea of a tower on the site that will have a new college on the lowest 10 floors and 18 floors of private housing on the top.

The two layers will have sandwiched between them a separating floor of leisure use that will be shared between the college and residents and contain some of the plant machinery for the building.

The tower will be linked into the existing college buildings by a four story glass atrium that will contain amenities for students plus two bridges for pedestrians allowing easy movement to the existing college campus.

The tower is roughly has an oval shaped footprint and a sloping roof looking towards the south making it lip-stick like whilst the residential section narrows at the waist to become more slender and give a sleeker profile than the more bulky lower floors.

It's been designed in such a shape to allow the penthouses to have balconies. The penthouses should provide a view stretching as far as the English Channel on a clear day. Slightly exposed service cores will rise briefly above it along with slender spires.

Croydon currently has Altitude 25 under construction which is set to be the joint tallest tower in the borough but if this is built it will take that title. There's also the local council's plans for Croydon Gateway only last week secured financing, much to the annoyance of Stanhope who insisted the council plans were commercially unviable and theirs were the way to go.

With this little lot happening, London's third skyline should retain its position in the foreseeable future.
