Orbit Investments are developing a new residential building to sit on Salford Quays, adding further to the general high-rise feel of the burgeoning residential district, Lowry Tower 3.

It is penned by the Fairhurst Design Group for a site that overlooks the Huron Basin and has clear views of Libeskind's Imperial War Museum North and is well within striking distance of the proposed Media City that the BBC are set to move to. The close proximity to no less than six tram stops and a quick journey to the centre of Manchester adds further to the appeal of the area.

Planned for a corner position on a very limited site the lack of land alone drives the developer to build tall through economic necessity as the tower rises from the attached lower rise block to occupy a corner of the site.

Containing 96 flats over 21 floors, it is essentially laid out with a cross-shaped floor-plan has the strong edges severely blunted by curving balconies around the corners of the tower that transform a rectangular shape into something more circular that helps it relate to the corner position it sits on not to mention another two nearby towers circular towers of the Lowry Theatre.

Following through the curved look is the unusually designed top of the building that looks like it has been crowned by an old style rotary telephone dial, a unique feature for a British high-rise.

This is just the latest proposal for an area that's only recently seen KW Linfoot's massive four 85 metre tall Harbour City Blocks approved, it certainly won't be the last.
