Multilpex To Begin Work On Electric Razor

Work is soon to get underway on the Castle House redevelopment scheme planned by Australian developer, Multiplex, for a key site in London's Elephant and Castle.

Currently suffering from the blight of sixties brutalism, the area has been marked for a massive redevelopment scheme that will see large portions of it bulldozed and rebuilt. At the heart of this rebuilding is a number of new tall buildings including the Multiplex Living Tower, the first one that will go ahead in the area.

As part of their development schedule, Multiplex have bought out their minority partner, the Espalier Group, in the scheme in a £12.15 million bid. This now leaves them as the sole owner of the scheme.

Designed by Hamilton Associates, the site is currently occupied by a low-rise concrete block that is due to begin demolition in the coming weeks. The replacement will be a 147 metre tall tower, the first residential venture by Multiplex in the U.K to begin construction although they have another tower in their development pipe-line off Gloucester Road. In total it has 43 floors which will offer 310 new apartments within the tower and a further 98 ones in a related affordable scheme.

The design is famous for the sci-fi detailing and a lipstick shaped crown that includes a 20 metre tall wind farm in the form of three turbines at the top of it. Curving gently inwards towards the blades, the shape concentrates the wind and increases efficiency.

It's also the presence and placement of these 9 metre diameter that have led to the nickname, the Electric Razor, due to the resemblance to a certain shaving product made by Philips.

Marketing of the apartments, aimed at young professionals who have money but aren't rich enough to live in the likes of the Pan Peninsula Tower, will begin in February 2007 and completion should be in 2009. Once built it will be briefly the tallest building south of the River Thames until London Bridge Tower overtakes it.
