37 storey Plaza approved
The 37 storey phase 2 of the Plaza has finally been approved by Leeds City Council.
The scheme was originally planned by Unite in two phases, comprising of a joining collection of mid-rise blocks up to 15 stories in phase 1, and a tower of 25 stories in phase 2. The design was considered a little fussy by some with the pallet of finishes perhaps typical of architects Carey Jones at the time, but giving an overall interesting appearance.
Phase 1 was completed almost to the original design with students moving in during late 2006, but phase 2 was sent back to the drawing board for a number of design changes and increases in height, first to 28 storeys, and later a complete redesign to the taller 37 storey design now approved.
The new design includes light zinc finished panels on the main body of the tower, and green tinted panels on the core cladding incorporating perforations that will be back illuminated to create a light feature at night.
The site is adjacent to the inner ring road at the northern boundary of the city centre, close to both the city universities, and close to other high rise student developments including the under construction Opal Tower, and others in the early planning stage.
It is anticipated that construction will start in the summer of 2007, with completion in 2009.
