Redevelopment Of Key Nottingham Site Planned
Nottingham could be set to get yet another mid-rise building in its commercial core if plans are realised to redevelop the Odeon site on Market Square.
CPMG Architects have designed a 13 floor 43 metre tall scheme that will sit on the site offering 120 new apartments, 165 hotel rooms in a four star hotel, 450 underground parking spaces plus retail outlets and a new restaurant at ground level.
Market Square in Nottingham is one of the key public areas. At one end sits the Council House, the impressively baroque city hall but unfortunately despite this old world splendour a number of redundant old blocks from the sixties also look on to this conservation area dragging it down.
This is particularly the case of the western end of the square that is dominated by buildings like Market Square House that transform what should be a buzzing area of Nottingham into something more befitting a rotting council estate than the very centre of a big British city.
The architect aims to bring this greyness to life with a pattern of horizontal coloured cladding on the scheme. As with Litmus, also designed by CPMG and being built in Nottingham right now, there is much attention paid to balconies although this time they are going to be an unusual triangular shape.
The development also occupies part of Maid Marian Way thanks to its corner location where the hotel element will be based. This means it will stand right next door to the existing Park Plaza Hotel and offer them with a more modern rival.
The council have yet to pass judgement on the scheme but given this plus the excellent transport links and the fact it is in the very centre of the city of Nottingham the only question is likely to be why a redevelopment of the site took so long.
