| Sturgis Plan St Katherines Dock Reit Asset Management may have suspended plans for a tower at St Katherines Dock called St Katherine's Point but all the indications are that the next phase of their ambitious redevelopment of the area will include a tall building in another place. The 11 floor residential tower has been designed by Sturgis Associates and will sit overlooking the entrance area to the dock near the site of Devon House and Tradewinds. At 17 floors, St Katherine's Point had proven controversial to the planners thanks to the proximity it has with both Tower Bridge and the Tower of London World Heritage Site but this new scheme is located further away from these sensitive areas and much shorter. Built in the 12th century, the dock was specifically intended to serve the Tower and act as the royal port as the first of the eastern docks. Despite these limitations it is however a prime site only five minutes walk away from the City of London with an appealing dockside location that makes it a rarity in the area where converted warehouses have become attractive residential and office accomodation for those who can afford them. The structure of the building also manages to be much less dominating than Reit's aborted tower plans with the shape curving onto a public plaza and tapering at the top to negate the impact. Drawings by the architect seem to clearly express the structure in the exterior in the form of an exo-skeleton that continues above the roof-line avoiding the warehouse-like solidity of its abandoned cousin. Attached is a curving lower-rise building, joined to the taller one by a skybridge on the top levels. There will also be retail and leisure use on the lower areas around the public square aiming to animate the dockside. Plans have yet to be submitted to the local council, Tower Hamlets, but are likely to surface at some point in 2007 along with the new plans on just what is going to happen to the St Katherine's Point site.
