Reit Dump St Katherines Dock Tower
Reit Asset Management have dumped the planned tower designed by architects Gaunt Francis for their redevelopment plans at St Katherine's Dock on the eastern edge of the fringe of the City of London in Wapping.
The St Katherine's Point tower was to have had 17 floors and contain 74 apartments however the dockside location for such a relatively tall building, but still a little over 50 metres in height, has proven controversial, not to mention the nearness of the location to the Tower of London.
Following consultations with local residents and the local council it was felt that the plans should be downscaled in terms of height and so it has been removed from the new planning application that Reit have filed.
This does not mean there will not be a tall building on site, rather the space in the plans is now blank whilst the developer and architect go back over them considering their options and seeing what stacks up.
There are other changes too to the project including design refinements of Commodity Quay plus the removal of the performance space that was planned outside Dickens Inn that some residents feared would prove too noisy.
The mixture of shops and restaurants at Commodity Quay and International House have been retained in the plans with only a few minor changes that take on board the comments of those who responded to the consultation exercise.
There's no date yet on when Reit want to start construction of the scheme but with their aim of creating what Alister Thomson, a company director has called "one of the most desirable city-centre marinas in the world" plus the prime location of a site that sites just behind the K2 office building and the Tower Hotel, they won't want to hang around for too long.
