Worlds Tallest TV Tower Opens
After decades ahead of the world, Canada has finally been spanked by China in the height stakes with the opening of the new TV and Sightseeing Tower in Guangzhou.
Designed by Information Based Architecture, the structure named the Canton Tower stands at a cool 610 metres high, overshadowing Canadas CN tower of 553 metres.
Ovoid in shape, the tower is almost reminiscent of a Tiki torch, with long, slim vertical struts gently twisting upwards to the almost hypodermic looking spire at its peak seemingly expressing a feeling of vertical torque along the way.
Slim horizontal struts make emphasize the towers curve, which architects hoped would invoke images of a slender female form, something that seems to have worked as apparently the project has earned the nickname the supermodel.
Throughout the tower various viewing platforms feature some are covered outdoor gardens while others actually protrude from the tower and come equipped with scary glass floors. The top platform has been designed to slope towards the old city as an attempt to bond the cities past and present.
It also features two rotating restaurants at 417.6 and 428 metres AGL where soup has been taken off the menu due to the sway in high winds that could be up to 1.5 metres making it a positively nautical experience. At least you will still be able to buy a nice steaming hot cup of coffee.
In the excitement of building such a tower authorities just couldnt wait until it was complete to throw its doors open to the public, the top platform is still under construction. This however did not stop a 3-day celebration being held that drew 30,000 visitors.
The delerium had to end however as the tower desperately needs to be completed in time for November's 2010 Asian Games. They won't have long to enjoy the record either, the Tokyo Sky Tree is on the up too and will surpass this once it is finally completed.
