Sky Tree Neighbour Rises Unnoticed
Much has been written about one of the world's tallest structures, the Tokyo Sky Tree, but what seems to have been lost in the shadow of that supertall is that there will be an accompany skyscraper to stand next to it.
Officially known as the Narihirabashi Oshiage Development Project, within the glass curtain wall covered tower will be a selection of offices to help make the overall development stack up economically.
Although there was an overwhelming need for a taller television tower in Tokyo thanks to the fact modern skyscrapers partially block the signal of the existing Tokyo Tower, land prices in the Sumida district are such that it would only be profitable if an entire complex was built with it taking advantage of the fact that an adjacent skyscraper could be constructed.
At 160 metres and 31 floors it will be dwarfed by its 634 metre tall neighbour, but it shares a stepped podium with no less than eight different levels of roof gardens along with a seimsmic proofed basement to help it withstand some of the tremours that Tokyo can sometimes experience.
Ground breaking began simulataneously on the office building and Sky Tree on the 14th of July 2008 with the office element of the project set to complete first in December 2011, four months before its taller neighbour.
