More Tall Buildings For Belfast
White Ink Architects in Belfast are working on a new development at the Murray Tobacco Works in Sandy Row. The scheme involves not only the restoration of the existing Victorian building on site but also a large scale mixed use regeneration project.
Early images of the masterplan show a massive mix of accommodation including new office space, apartments, family houses and on site parking plus landscaped public areas between the blocks.
The highlight of the scheme is a 28 floor tall landmark residential tower on one corner of the site that will be one of the tallest buildings in Belfast if it's built.
This isn't the only project that White Ink are working on in Belfast. They have also designed an 18 floor tall residential block at Pilot Street that will be roughly 54 metres high.
The Pilot Street building will have a stepping design that has been massed to help it relate more effectively to a nearby church. A highly post-modern look is employed in the design with external balconies, white render and terracotta creating the appearance of a stereotypical early 21st century apartment block.
There will be 135 apartments contained within plus roof gardens and a raised internal courtyard for residents to enjoy.
Both of these projects show just how times have changed in Belfast in the last few years. The Murray Tobacco Factory for example is situated in the heart of Loyalist Belfast and wouldn't have been touched by a developer with a bargepole for fear of local protection rackets and other problems associated with the troubles and such an area would hardly be top of the list of places that young professionals would wish to live in.
Now peace is breaking out, areas long starved of investment, but which are located in appealing locations are becoming increasingly attractive for property developers who can secure good returns taking advantage of the still relatively low prices they command.
